Tuesday Sept. 7th: Get acquainted with both websites discussed in class today (BBC world news and the world pen-pal site..) Don’t choose your pen-pal countries yet! We will discuss in class tomorrow and it’s important that we agree to as much geographic diversity as possible. Make preliminary choices (3) and final choices will be made in class tomorrow. Also, starting tonight, make it a nightly habit to skim the BBC website and click on articles from at least three diverse regions of the world each night, taking notes so that you can report briefly in class what you have learned the next day.

Wed. Sept. 8th: Register with pen-pal website for snail mail pen-pal and begin to communicate with online penpal(s). Please don’t take on more correspondents than you can realistically keep up with on a regular basis. In addition to making some exciting new friends, our main purpose is to learn as much as possible about the rest of the world, and you should aim for long-term correspondences with a select number of people (preferably one or two.) Think quality and not quantity! Also, skim the BBC website as described above

Thursday Sept. 9th Go to the BBC website and skim world news. Choose one topic for further enquiry, and take notes so that you can present it orally in a knowledgeable way tomorrow. Please be prepared to speak to the group from memory without reading from your chosen article. Also, please Google additional information online for supporting information to round out you talk. Remember: even though the BBC is known for its impartiality, it is always a good idea to research multiple sources to insure that your information will be just that and not opinion.
