Homework Mrs. Jane Levine
In light of our unit on ethical egoism and our discussion of Ayn Rand, and for 8th graders, also in light of the message in An Audience for Einstein, do you see anyone’s life as having more value than anyone else’s? Please don’t worry about political correctness, but instead think carefully about this and express your true thoughts. What arguments can you come up with to support each side of the argument—Rand’s and the ethical egoists, and the opposing point of view. Please end by taking on the role of chair of a hospital’s ethics committee and decide who of three of your patients all needing a kidney, is going to be the recipient of the one donor kidney you now have on hand (assume that all three share the same blood type and are compatable donor recipients.) Also assume that one is 15 years old and a student; one is a 35 year old stay-at-home mother, and one is a 63 year old businessman.

Homework Mrs. Jane Levine
As we all know, this was a very strange, unsettling book. For your final assessment, please write an essay in which you cover the following questions: what do you think will happen to Erik? What should happen to him? Do you think Paul’s parents have learned anything permanent from all that has happened? What do you think will become of the entire family unit? We have spent a great deal of time discussing what we did not like about the book, but there are some things that the author, Edward Bloor, does very well. Please write about what you see as the book’s strong qualities. What social concerns does Bloor feel strongly about and make an ongoing theme throughout the book? Please end your essay by giving your own totally subjective opinion of the book, including the effect that it has had on you.
